Aside from being loyal, dogs are also protective of the ones they love. Dogs will do everything to protect the people or fellow animals who are dear to them. Although this is normal between dogs and humans, dogs can also build an unusual friendship with their fellow animals.
This is what happened to Hunter, a Belgian Malinois, who befriended a giraffe named Jazz. Jazz got abandoned by his mother after birth and got rescued by Hunter’s human. This is how the two animals’ friendship started. It was an unconventional meeting at the Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo, South Africa. Later on, however, the two animals developed a rock-solid friendship.
Since Jazz got orphaned, the giraffe incurred so many wounds all over his body. It was Hunter who looked after Jazz when he was recuperating from these injuries. According to Hunter’s handler, the pooch is a security and anti-poaching dog for the orphanage. This is why the pooch is no stranger to doing certain functions like guarding as well as looking after other animals.
Hunter has already done this in the past. But the friendship he built with the giraffe is different from the rest. The dog’s handler mentioned that the dog was so protective of the injured giraffe and would not leave his side. Furthermore, the dog would make sure that the giraffe is well-fed, as well as his wounds treated accordingly. When Jazz somehow regained his strength, it was the pooch who first saw it. Hunter then taught the giraffe how to use his feet to walk and do stuff.
With the giraffe’s recovery, the orphanage’s caretakers lauded the pooch for a job well done. Hunter’s handler said that if not for the dog’s genuine kindness towards the giraffe, the recovery would not be possible. But more than this, the dog’s handler is pleased because Jazz could already enjoy the new life waiting for him.
