Six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton was a proud vegan – and it seems that his dog is already a vegan, too!
This was after his announcement that Roscoe, his dog, had gone fully vegan just like him. Lewis also said that his pup was also experiencing better health.
The dog’s new lifestyle
In an Instagram post, Lewis announced Roscoe’s new lifestyle. He also enumerated the benefits of his pup’s new diet. He claimed that Roscoe’s coat was much softer, and his swollen paws had already healed up.
On top of that, Lewis said that Roscoe’s breathing had opened up and that he was no longer limping because of arthritis. He claimed that he was super happy with the results, and the dog was happy, too.
The 35-year-old racer announced in 2017 that he was going vegan. Since then, he had been a vocal advocate of the said diet. He explained to the BBC that he adopted a plant-based diet because the cruelty to animals was horrible; he didn’t want to support that, and he wanted to live a healthier life.
Experts weigh in
While it was difficult to refute the environmental effects caused by the meat industry, it was not entirely explored whether it is right or ethical to give dogs a vegan diet.
Daniella Dos Santos, the president of BVA or the British Veterinary Association, said that under the Animal Welfare Act, the owner was obliged to feed an animal with the right diet. She said that it is fine if a person’s personal belief system includes not wanting to consume any animal protein. However, the said diet was not designed to comply with the welfare standards.
Daniella added that it was theoretically possible to give dogs a vegetarian diet. However, it was much easier to get it wrong than to get it right. If one were to do it, it should be under the supervision of a nutritionist with veterinary training.
