Dr. Kwane Stewart worked as a shelter veterinarian 12 years ago before offering free medical help to homeless people’s fur babies. Dr. Kwane recalled many animal owners were dumping their pets at the pound because they could not afford to care for them anymore when the recession happened a decade ago.
Dr. Kwane realized that many people in his community need help, especially the underprivileged ones and their pets. Dr. Kwane shared that he immediately started setting up his medical table near a soup kitchen, asked anybody who had a pet, and told them that he would treat their furbabies for free.

Dr. Kwane eventually started walking down the streets and gently approaching homeless people to introduce himself. Dr. Kwane shared that he asks the underprivileged ones that he meets if they could let him treat their pets for free.
Dr. Kwane shared that he always feels relieved whenever homeless people gladly take his help. Dr. Kwane said that he immediately shifts his focus to the animal as soon as he gets the animal owner’s approval.
Dr. Kwane recalled that he eventually started partnering with various animal hospitals and doctors to help more in need. Dr. Kwane said that he has helped around almost 400 animals.
Dr. Kwane shared that he keeps a medical bag in his car if he sees someone on the streets who needs his help. Dr. Kwane recalled that he was able to treat a dog next to a traffic light because he always has his kit in the trunk.
Dr. Kwane shared how amazing it was to help relieve an animal’s suffering. Dr. Kwane said that he often gets callbacks from the homeless people he helped because they wanted to thank him for treating their pets, and he admitted that seeing them all happy makes his efforts worthwhile.
